Packet Pickup Party  – Thursday, August 30th – 5:00 – 8:00 pm

  • The Massillon Triathlon will host a Packet Pickup Party where competitors can come to retrieve their race packets.  During the Pack Pickup Party, theMassillonRecreationCenterwill open the gym and fitness center to participants for a fun experience.  All facility rules and age restrictions do apply.
  • All participants must supply a photo ID of the person who is racing when picking up packets.

Note: No Day of Race, race changes. No refunds, transfers, medical comps or rollovers under any circumstances.

 

Who brings a kayak or a canoe?
All competitors are welcome to bring their own canoe or kayak. The first twenty solo participants to sign up for the Triathlon will receive a kayak, unless they choose to use their own.  All other solo competitors will need to provide their own kayaks. Canoes will be provides for all team participants.

 

Team Participants:
There’s two types of participants.  Solo OR Team.  A team consist of two players.  Both members of the team will compete in each part of the race.  During the canoe portion, the team members will compete together (in the same canoe).  At the conclusion of the race, scores will be combined.

Race Day – Saturday, September 1st – 5:30 am – 12:00 pm

Race Day Registration, Packet Pick-up and Set-up time

  •  Participants can begin to arrive at the Massillon Recreation Center at 5:30am.
  •  You MUST park at the Great Escape Movie Theatre parking lot.  It is located behind the Massillon Recreation Center off of Cherry Road.  You cannot park at the Massillon Recreation Center.

Race Rules

  • The race begins promptly at 8:00 am.  All participants must complete the Triathlon within a four (4) hour time limit.
  •  Bib numbers are specific personal identifiers and may not be exchanged with or transferred/sold to any other person.
  • Saleand/or transfer of race entry/bibs are strictly prohibited and will result in the disqualification and/or banned of any individual involved from future events.
  • All participants shall be assembled for the race to start by 7:45 am.

Course

  • The course has 4 different sections
  • Section 1 – Run 3.95 miles from Massillon Recreation Center to Canoe Launch Point #1 off 40 Corners
  • Section 2 – Canoe 3 miles from Canoe Launch Point #1 off 40 Corners to Lake Avenue Trailhead
  • Section 3 – Run 1.6 miles from Lake Avenue Trailhead to Massillon Recreation Center
  • Section 4 – Bike 12 miles from Massillon Recreation Center through various streets and then back to the Massillon Recreation Center

Kayaks & Canoes

  • If you are bringing your own kayak/canoe you must take it to the Canoe Launch Point #1 off 40 Corners between the hours of 5:30 – 7:30 am.  Directions to get there from Massillon Recreation Center:  Take 21 North to Forty Corners.  Turn right.  Go 1 Mile and on the left you will see a sign for the Massillon Triathlon.  Turn left and a quick right.  Drive straight and unload you kayak/canoe in the field.  There will be volunteers there to help you.
  • If you are supplying your own kayak/canoe you must also supply the paddles and life jackets for each participant. You must attach your bib number(s) to your kayak/canoe.
  • Rental canoes will be set up at the Canoe Launch Point #1 off 40 Corners for you and will include your life jacket and paddles.  You may wish to verify the location of your kayak/canoe to ensure a smoother transition and adjust your lifejackets.
  • LIFE JACKETS MUST BE WORN BY ALL PARTICIPANTS.  DISQUALIFACTION WILL OCCUR IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR LIFE JACKET ON.

Water Stations

  •  There will be three (3) water stations provided throughout the race.
  •  Location 1—Lake Avenue Trailhead—Mile 1
  •  Location 2 – Canoe Launch Point #1 off 40 Corners
  •  Location3 – Lake Avenue Trailhead
  • Location 4 –Massillon Recreation Center

Transition

*There will be three (3) transitions throughout the race.*

Transition 1 – Canoe Launch Point #1 off 40 Corners from running to kayak/canoe

  • You will need to make this transition without any assistance from the volunteer staff. Participants will be required to get their kayak/canoe in the water on their own.
  • Both team members must be present to launch their canoe.
  • If athletes want to do a shoe change before or after the canoe they are responsible for their belongings.  There will be NO drop bags.  Support from the race organization is prohibited.

  Transition2 – Lake Avenue Trailhead from kayak/canoe to running.

  • When exiting the water, again participants must do so without any assistance from the volunteers.  Your kayak/canoe must be all the way out of the water and you must CARRY it up the ramp to the top.  Your life jackets and paddles must be inside before you can proceed to the final running portion.

Transition 3 –Massillon Recreation Center from running to biking

  • During this transition there will be runners and bikes at the same location.  Please use caution!
  • Follow the signage that will dictate if you need to stay to your right to avoid collisions.
  • Ensure that you have the correct bike with your bib number on it.
  • Make sure to bring water for the riding section of the race.

Bikes

  • You must drop off your own bike at the Massillon Recreation Center and have it ready for the race prior to 7:30 am.  Bikes are not provided.
  • You will be assigned a bike location so that you know where your bike is.
  • Each bike must have a D-Tag number on the bike. (Instructions will be in your packet.)
  • HELMETS MUST BE WORN BY ALL PARTICIPANTS.  DISQUALIFICATION WILL OCCUR IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR HELMET ON.
  • The course is on the towpath trail is crushed gravel and there is some rough terrain.
  • This is not a closed course.  You are expected to follow all traffic rules.   The course will be marked and volunteers will be throughout the course to assist you if you have trouble.

Post Race

  • Refreshments are immediately after sponsored by the Subway series.
  • Awards will be done as soon as possible.
  •  You must retrieve your own kayak/canoe and equipment at Lake Avenue Trailhead.  Volunteers will have your equipment stored off to the side and safe.  You must use your bib number to match to your kayak/canoe to pick it up.   Directions to Lake Avenue Trailhead:  take 21 north and turn left onLake Avenue.  Take next left into parking lot.  Canoes/Kayaks will be straight on the right.  You must retrieve your own bike and equipment from the Massillon Recreation Center.

EVENT RULES & GUIDELINES APPLICABLE TO ALL PARTICIPANTS

  • Registrants must be capable of completing the full distance, start line to finish line, within event time requirement (4 hours).
  • To register, you must be 16 years of age or older on event day. For Adult/Child category the child must be 10 on event day.
  • Individuals under 18 years of age must have a statement signed by their parent or legal guardian permitting participation.
  • Each participant must sign an event waiver before participating in the event.
  • The event time requirement and age minimum apply to all forms of entry and event participation.
  • Participant race number bibs are specific personal identifiers and may not be exchanged with or transferred/ sold to any other person.
  • Sale and/or transfer of race entry/bibs is strictly prohibited and will result in the disqualification and/or banning of any individuals involved from future events.
  • All entry fees are non-refundable, and may not be deferred toward a future event.

PACKET (BIB NUMBER) PICK-UP

  • Each participant must provide photo identification at the time of Participant Packet Pick-Up, verifying identity as the registrant, to whom the event bib number is assigned.
  • In the event a registered participant wishes to have another individual pick up his/her Participant Packet, the registered participant must provide that individual with his/her confirmation ticket and that individual must provide photo identification and sign to release the Participant Packet.
  • Participants are responsible for verifying that the timing device provided within the Participant Packet or the participant’s own device is working properly prior to the race and worn correctly during the race. Any problems with the timing device must be addressed at the Participant Services Desk at the time of Packet Pick-Up.
  • Every participant shall be provided with an event bib number, which shall be conspicuously worn on the front (and back when applicable) during the event. The event bib number is to be worn as issued. No participant shall be permitted to participate in the event without the appropriate bib number.
  • The use of video devices, cell phones, computers, cameras or any similar devices by participants while in the event is prohibited.
  • There are no tandem bikes allowed.
  • The use of wheeled devices by participants or any other person authorized to be on the course shall be strictly limited to (a) authorized and registered competitive wheelchair participants and (b) authorized course marshals on bicycles. Baby joggers, baby strollers, skateboards, roller blades, unauthorized bicycles or any other wheeled device will not be permitted on the course.
  • Participants must begin the event during the official recognized starting times.

THE START

  • All participants are responsible for knowing the race’s start time and check-in method for their start corral.
  • Participants shall assemble for the race at start no less than 15 minutes prior to the race start
  • All participants must be positioned behind the line when starting.

COURSE MONITORING

  • Any participant who refuses to obey the directions of the event official, city official or course marshal, or who conducts himself/herself in an unsportsmanlike manner, or who is offensive by action or language to officials, volunteers, participants or spectators may be disqualified by the event and future participation at the discretion of race officials.
  • No participant, after leaving the course, shall be allowed to rejoin the race either for the purpose of gaining a place or to pace or to assist another participant.
  • Any person who participates in the event without a current official event bib number or timing device or a bib or chip not officially assigned to him/her is subject to removal and disqualification from future events.
  • No persons are authorized to be on the course unless they are registered participants. Therefore, no person shall be allowed to accompany a participant if he/she is not registered in the event, nor shall any participant be allowed, without the permission of the event management, to receive assistance or refreshment from anyone during the progress of the event. Any person not properly displaying an authorized and issued bib number shall be directed to leave the course.

PARTICIPANT SAFETY

  • The use of video devices, cell phones, computers, cameras or any similar devices by participants while in the event is prohibited. Baby joggers, baby strollers, skateboards, rollerblades, unauthorized bicycles or any other wheeled device will not be permitted.
  • Participants are responsible for their recognition and understanding of event signage, symbols and color relating to participant maps, facilities and direction.
  • Event officials reserve the right to delay, cancel, or suspend the race due to inclement weather in accordance with Emergency Protocol on severe emergencies and/or inclement weather.

RESULT TIMING

  • All participants are assigned a timing device prior to the event in their Participant Packet.
  • Participants must wear their assigned timing device continuously attached to their shoe, from start line to finish line, to receive an accurate finish time.
  • Participant net times greater than the event time requirement (4 hours) will not be recognized as official.

TIMING DISQUALIFICATION

  • Participants found to be wearing two or more timing devices during the race will be disqualified and their results will not be recorded.
  • Participants with missing timing device times at official checkpoints will be reviewed and may be disqualified.
  • All participant timing device times are reviewed before participant times are designated official.
  • Participants must begin the event during the official recognized starting time in order to register an official course completion time.

AMMENDMENTS / RESERVATIONS / ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

  • Event officials reserve the right, to modify, supplement or waive all or part of the event rules
  • Participants shall be bound by any modification or supplement of the event rules published prior to the event.\
  • Failure to follow these event rules, as may be amended, will result in immediate disqualification, loss of prize money and removal from official results.
